Five of the Best Self-Build Exhibitions
"It's who you know" - the old age saying we've all heard before, but it's not just relevant when trying to get a new job. Talking and listening to experts in the building industry is probably one of the best ways to achieve your self-build dreams. And that's where exhibitions come in handy! So, to give you a helping hand, we've curated a list of 5 of the best self-build exhibitions in the UK.
1. Build It Live
If you’re in need of some practical solutions and products for your self-build, get yourself down to the Build It Live exhibitions. Hosted at three different locations across the UK every year, these events involve some of the most practical inspirations around.
- South East Show, 8-9 February 2020, Kent Event Centre
- North West Show, 22-23 February 2020, EventCity, Manchester
- Bicester Show, June (date TBC) 2020, Bicester, Oxfordshire
Free seminars and workshops covering various areas of self-building, free one-to-one advice from industry experts, tips on finding the right builder or the right plot, and also advice for cost control through the Build It Estimating Service. The Build It Live exhibitions are great for anyone that is knee-deep in their self-build and searching for some inspiration or innovative ideas.
2. Grand Designs Live
Most of us will recognise Kevin’s soothing voice when Grand Designs is on, but for any self-builders or McCloud superfans, Grand Designs Live is the award-winning home event for ideas, inspiration and expert advice. Hosted at Birmingham’s NEC from 9-13 October this year and in 2020 at London’s ExCeL from 2-10 May, this expert-led exhibition is designated into 6 project zones:
- Build
- Garden
- Interiors
- Kitchens/Bathrooms
- Technology
- Design Arcade
So, if you’re in need of more specific advice such as interior design ideas or renewable technology options, then Grand Designs Live is a great venue for you. The Grand Theatre hosts talks from industry experts and Kevin McCloud, showcasing the next best innovations in the build and design industry.
And even more specific to self-builders, Grand Designs Live have partnered with the National Custom and Self Build Association (NaCSBA) to host an event around National Custom and Self Build Week. From 6-10 May, this event aims to break down any misconceptions surrounding building your own home. This includes live talks and debates from NaCSBA specialists, one-to-one expert advice, and access to over 500 suppliers and architects all under one roof.
3. Future Build
To build a future-proof house, you must first understand the challenges impacting the industry. Future Build is hosted at ExCeL in London from 5-7 March and is an excellent place to gain insight around the latest innovations, products and materials. Features include concrete futures, natural building, urban infrastructure, wastage ideas, and offsite building, among many others.
This inspiring exhibition provides over 500 hours of structured learning across conferences, seminars and workshops, perfect to fuel your self-build dreams and innovations.
4. Self-Build & Design Shows
For new self-builders that need some questions answered or the veteran builders in need of some new ideas, the Self-Build & Design Shows are a great source for all types of inspiration. Hosted in two different locations throughout the year;
- South West at Westpoint Arena, Exeter, from 7-8 September
- East at Peterborough Arena from 7-8 March
These exhibitions involve an array of industry-led features, including the chance to speak with manufacturers, architects, suppliers, designers, builders and project advisors, as well as local and national companies.
And if you want to find out how to get your self-build started or how to fund your project, there are seminars for that, while product demonstrations and masterclasses can provide you with realistic ideas towards new systems and ideas.
5. The National Self-Build and Renovation Show
Hosted at the National Self-Build and Renovation Centre, Swindon, in January, May and October, the 67,000 sq ft. exhibition space is open all year round, holds over 250 exhibitors, live demonstrations, and the chance to meet industry-standard architects and designers. But what sets this exhibition apart is the focus on building high-performance properties or ones that use natural materials, all of which promote the Passivhaus standards of house building. And at a time of ecological importance, we believe these principles are great for some innovative eco-friendly ideas.
Other features include more management based exhibits, including self project managing, package managing, and using subcontractors, all of which are very relevant for anyone struggling to piece together a build plan.
So, now you've got a calendar full of worthwhile exhibitions to visit, it's time to get your thinking cap on and make the most of what's on offer. The best way to achieve your self-build dreams is to engulf yourself in the industry, so get out there and give it a go.
